Hooves Up! …with a touch of Glitter is a community documentary presented as a drag queen Storytime. The film is built around the storytime book Glitter Goes to City Hall, read aloud by Yvonna Vote, performed by Durham based drag performer ‘Lady Liz Taylor’. Yvonna guides viewers through each chapter as it unfolded over recent years in Pickering and Durham Region. Yvonna also appears as a playful newscaster, offering commentary with cutaways to real footage, including moments from public meetings and community events.
At the centre of the film is Glitter, a unicorn who serves as the group’s civic education activist and mascot. Glitter often carries a sign that says, “Everyone Welcome”, but when misinformation appeared, Glitter and friends prepared boards to snap back at false claims, defend DEI, teach gender inclusion, and support families at Drag Queen Storytime events.
The book follows Glitter’s journey as they travel to City Hall to learn about the Provincial Bill 9, now known as The Municipal Accountability Act. The documentary also includes interviews with local leaders and community activists who helped shape this moment.
This will be the first public screening of the film outside of festivals. We are grateful to have received awards for Best Future Documentary at Niagara International Film Festival, and Best Feature Documentary – Honourable Mention at Pickering International Film Festival.
